Formulation - Corporate Rotary Club
Boeing Employees Rotary Club - Mesa (BERCM)
The Boeing Site - Mesa, AZ
Background:
The formulation steps described below are a summary
of the activity involved in Chartering the initial "Corporate Rotary Club"
at the Boeing site, Mesa, AZ during the January - March 2001 time frame
Actions:
-
During the 2000 and 2001 schools years, the
Rotary Clubs of Sun Lakes and Gilbert AZ teamed with Boeing in the delivery
of the "Choices" program (http://www.choicesedgroup.org/)
to area schools. Coordination meetings at Boeing between a key Boeing executive,
Boeing and Rotary personnel developed an appreciation of "Rotary"
that evolved into an investigation of the feasibility of establishing a
Boeing Rotary Club to be recognized by Boeing and Rotary.
-
From a Boeing position, the club would have to conform
to the "Procedures for Becoming a Boeing Mesa Recreation Club or Special
Interest Group" (Click to view Procedures)
and the associated PROCEDURE PRO-99 "Boeing Employees' Recreation Clubs"
(Click to view PRO-99). There appeared to be no
problem in compliance with the foregoing. In fact, there were significant
advantages of being a Boeing Club. i. e. use of Boeing facilities and standard
support foundations. The required Constitution and By-laws, Officers, etc.
were very compliant with Rotary International's.
-
The District 5510 Governor coordinated a list of "possible
deviations" from the standard Rotary Constitution and By-laws required
by the Boeing Club requirements with Rotary International. Attendance was
the only major issue. Work comes first for the Boeing employee - Rotary
Club attendance will not compromise work assignments. The District Governor
received the "OK" to proceed with the targeted March Chartering.
- Two area Rotary Clubs co-sponsored the new club: Mesa
East and Sun Lakes Rotary Clubs.
-
Five Rotary 12:00 - 1:00 Monday meetings were conducted
at Boeing from January 30th through February 26th to obtain the twenty required
charter members (Click for Agendas/Pictures). Twenty five charter members
were obtained.
-
The local Rotary Club that encompassed the territory
covered by the Boeing site gave permission.
-
All required Rotary International submittals were prepared
by Wednesday, February 28th and forwarded by the District Governor.
-
The chartering program was prepared, letters inviting
guests, etc. were sent, and the facilities at Boeing committed to host the
March chartering
-
Summary:
Many, many individuals, and several Rotary Clubs teamed
together to accomplish the chartering of this initial "Corporate Rotary
Club". Subsequent corporate charterings will have to perform similar activities.
The key is to want to make it happen! If the will is there it can. All of us
involved feel this chartering could be the forerunner of many thousands of corporate
based clubs worldwide. Many Boeing employees stated they would have joined Rotary
years ago, however, work commitments did not allow attendance. Now, typically
eating during the "in-house" meetings, they can be Rotarians!! Additionally,
every corporation has a designated "Community Relations" director
or focal point. That individual is a natural for the Rotary Director - Community
Service.
