DS512E FLIGHT SIMULATOR - ARIZONA SCIENCE CENTER
AZ ROTARY - PARTNERSHIP
3-5-2001
- Arizona Science Center (ASC) is the current Fiscal Agent for the High Tech
and Software Industry Cluster School to Work partnerships.
- School to Work provided year 2000/2001 funds for fabrication of an advanced
DS512E Flight Simulator and the initial phasing-in to the ASC programs. A
classroom environment is provided, and ASC recently hired two staff to promote
and facilitate the Flight Simulator. Mike Pisarik is a retired schoolteacher
and is responsible for Flight Center curriculum creation and day-to-day operation
of the program. Jim Klemaszewski, a recent ASU PhD, is responsible for the
center's K-12 outreach. Laura Martin is VP of Education and is directly responsible
for these programs. Ms. Martin has made preliminary plans for an additional
simulator on the floor and has an existing program called SCIENCE ON WHEELS,
the center's OUTREACH VAN PROGRAM.
- A statewide traveling ROTARY sponsored project to provide a "portable classroom"
with a DS512E simulator and the supporting flight awareness activities could
be made available to the ASC. The administration for awareness and follow-up
scheduling is already in place at ASC through the SCIENCE ON WHEELS OUTREACH
VAN PROGRAM.
- Training of the participating ROTARY Club sponsors to assist in use of the
ROTARY TRAVELING FLIGHT CENTER EXPERIENCE can be accomplished, in most cases
by using a video training program. A training seminar at ASC with the addition
of familiarization with the total ASC Flight Center Program could easily be
arranged as well.
- When a Rotary Flight Center Experience outreach is scheduled by ASC, usually
far in advance, the closest participating ROTARY Club will be contacted to
help administer the schools flight experience.
- The Desert Sages Retirees Club (DSRC) School to Work Contractor are currently
in the process of completing fabrication of the DS512E Developmental Prototype
for delivery to ASC and will complete the Documentation Package and Manufacturing
Plan in the March/April time span.
- A preliminary estimated max cost for the production DS512E Simulator is
$20,000 and possibly with ASU East participation as much as 25% less is anticipated.
Completion and delivery of the first production unit can be as early as 1
August 2001 to prepare for the 2001/2002 school year.
- Though not cost estimated, a trailer to house the "portable classroom" and
provide easy movement to any statewide location is expected to be the most
economical plan. The existing ASC vans could be used to pull the trailer.
A dedicated truck to provide the "portable classroom" as a permanent transport
method would be ideal
Summary:
It is proposed that a multi-club ROTARY
District 5500 sponsorship of the ROTARY Traveling Flight Center be established.
BERCM will provide the initial leadership. Building a close relationship and
team spirit with statewide ROTARY CLUBS and the AZ Science Center can only lead
to a better utilization of this wonderful ARIZONA resource.

ASC ENGINEERS WEEK EXPO
Over 80 schools were serviced in one day, with Peoria, Glendale, Kyrene, Goodyear, Tolleson, Avondale, Washington, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Chandler, Gilbert, Awhatukee, Fountain Hills, Tempe, Wickenberg and other districts being heavily represented. Students gained extra credit for engineer interviews, which were accomplished in addition to the flight experience.
Obviously it was StoW's best day ever for the Flight Simulation activity and was a boon to advertising the "soon to be" ASC Flight Center Program. With over 3,000 in attendance that day, most every school district in the county was represented, with hordes of potential future engineers who were eager flyers of the simulators.
With long waiting lines from 10AM to 5PM, the Mesa Public School's DS46 and DS46E Flight Simulators were the center of attention and over 400 kids experienced the thrill of flight simulation.
With 7 hours of constant service, the simulators had their most strenuous workout to date ... not so much as a hiccup!!
One special customer was StoW Director Caroline Van Ingen-Dunn and her pretty daughter (only the daughter flew!).
In addition, another 100 sat in the nearly completed DS512E Simulator soon to be delivered to ASC and listened to the plans for a Flight Center Program for all of Arizona to enjoy.
